Aloha Members,

As the hotel industry continues to navigate rapid shifts in policy and economy, here’s a quick update on key national developments that may affect our industry here in Hawai‘i:

  • New Tariffs Take Effect This Week: A 10% universal tariff and country-specific increases are now in motion, with a sharp 104% tariff on Chinese imports beginning Wednesday.

  • Hotel Industry Advocates on Rising Costs: AHLA and HHA continue pushing back on tariffs and proposed TAT hikes due to growing concerns around increased operational costs and declining international travel.

  • STVR & Lighting Bill Updates: Ongoing meetings with Chair Lee and Councilmembers Sugimura and Kama to move forward on key legislative items including the Lighting Bill and STVR economic impact study.

  • County of Hawaiʻi Legislative Activity: No new bills directly impacting HHA submitted so far. TAR bills are under review, and Mayor Alameda’s team to present at the Kona-Kohala Chamber luncheon.

  • Industry Collaboration in Maui: Strengthened partnerships with MHLA and ILWU to support workforce issues, Kaʻanapali redevelopment, and ongoing property access concerns.

Legislation Tracking: Bills highlighted in this newsletter include

  • Hawaiʻi Island: HB504, SB1396, SB1660, HB430 / SB327, HB784, HB348, SB182 & SB83
